About RF Microneedling

Newport Beach, CA board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi uses an exceptional approach that creates excellent results for our patients with a treatment known as radiofrequency (RF) microneedling with Vivace technology. Using sterile, gold-plated needles combined with carefully controlled radiofrequency energy, Vivace RF microneedling helps to reduce pore size, wrinkles, and stretch marks on the skin. RF laser treatments have been around for many years and are well-known in the cosmetic industry for skin tightening. This particular type of laser treatment uses heat to stimulate the production of collagen in the deeper layers of the skin to create a tighter, smoother surface. This technique can be used with microneedling to optimize the results. At SSK Plastic Surgery, we often add this new advancement to our Newport Beach, CA patient's skin care treatments to create firmer skin with a smoother texture and a glowing complexion.

About Vivace™

Vivace is a state-of-the-art RF microneedling device that works to stimulate the production of new collagen in the skin. By combining microneedling with blue and red light radiofrequency energy, Vivace uses wound healing mechanisms to create micro-injuries to the skin in order to promote regeneration. The Vivace handheld device consists of small gold-plated needles, as well as radiofrequency energy to penetrate the skin and stimulate the regeneration of collagen and elastin. While the red-light radiofrequency energy promotes collagen production, the blue-light energy works to decrease oil production. The Vivace robotic monitor also helps to decrease discomfort associated with RF microneedling while still providing desirable results.

Ideal Candidates

If you are 40 years of age or older and are starting to notice discoloration, smile lines, age spots, and other skin problems (that can come with age and sun exposure), RF microneedling might be the perfect treatment for you. RF microneedling may be an excellent choice if you wish to:

  • Tighten the skin, producing a more refreshed appearance
  • Enhance skin texture, tone, and pigment
  • Repair skin irregularities such as blood vessels and discoloration
  • Reduce the appearance of age spots and sun damage
  • Treat acne scars and other forms of scarring
  • Rejuvenate skin for a younger, glowing look

Procedure Technique

The Vivace device is rolled gently against the skin to puncture and create micro-injuries that "disrupt" the cells and produce collagen. Some also refer to this as collagen induction therapy. New skin grows as the skin heals, leaving the top layer feeling and looking smoother, brighter, and rejuvenated. While this procedure is usually performed by itself, combining this advanced technique with the Vivace radiofrequency technology has allowed us to optimize the results for our patients.

The method is quite straightforward. The handheld device, which emits radiofrequency heat, works by delivering short pulses of RF energy through an array of 25 sterilized, gold-plated micro-needles. The energy is transmitted through the needles, which simultaneously punctures the skin and circles back the electrodes on the skin. The RF energy heats at levels that provide cumulative and ongoing benefits.

What to Expect

RF microneedling treatment will take place inside the SSK Plastic Surgery office with the use of a numbing cream to minimize discomfort. During your appointment, the Vivace handheld device will roll over the desired area, repeating the process until the desired results have been reached. Patients should expect minute pinpoint scabs to appear 24 – 72 hours after treatment, which will naturally shed when the underlying micro-injury has healed. Results become visible as skin heals over the 3 – 4 weeks after having a microneedling with RF procedure. Optimal results usually call for 3 – 4 treatments 3 – 4 weeks apart.
