What is Microdermabrasion?

SSK Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, CA offers a variety of skin care treatments, including micodermabrasion. Your skin is constantly exposed to harsh environmental elements everyday, such as UV rays, dust, smoke, and pollution. Therefore, your skin can use a little "pick-me-up" every now and then. This is why board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi, offers microderabrasion treatments at his cosmetic practice. Dr. Kelishadi and his staff will work diligently to not only provide you with quality skin treatments, but to educate you on how to care for your specific skin type. A great benefit of micodermabrasion is that it's a noninvasive, outpatient procedure that utilizes microcrystals to gently remove the outermost layer of skin. This process enables the growth of a new skin layer that will leave you with healthier, younger-looking skin.

Who is a candidate for MICRODERMABRASION?

You are an ideal candidate if you have fine facial wrinkles, sun spots, clogged pores, rough skin texture, minor scars, or uneven pigmentation. Micodermabrasion works to improve all of these skin conditions, which is why it's one of our most popular skin care treatments. However, microdermabrasion is not recommended for those with deep scars, severe acne, or an auto-immune disorder.

Dr. Kelishadi is absolutely amazing! I went in for micro needling and I'm not even kidding... it was completely painless. And not the kind of "painless" that waxing and laser hair removal ads say where it actually hurts like crazy... It was actually PAINLESS. His attention to detail was great, and I was able to take headshots 6 days later with no redness whatsoever. I've been getting tons of comments that I look visibly several years younger. I have the best skin right now that I've ever had. I couldn't recommend him enough!

What to expect during MICRODERMABRASION

Prior to treatment, your skin will be cleansed and you will be comfortably seated in one of our spacious procedure rooms. During treatment, a small hand-held device, which is equipped with microcrystals, is used to gently exfoliate the skin. The device is also equipped with a mild suction system to immediately remove any skin debris during the exfoliation process. Micordermabrasion only removes the very top-layer of skin to remove old, damaged, or dead skin cells. Therefore, it does not harm the deep layers of skin and works to promote new skin production. Typically, there is no pain during treatment. However, you may experience a warm massage-like sensation, which patients have reported to be very therapeutic.

How long is recovery after MICRODERMABRASION?

Micodermabrasion treatments typically last 30 – 60 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, you are able to return to their daily activities. However, you should refrain from direct sun exposure as your skin will be more sensitive. Redness is the most common side effect of treatment, but this should subside within a few days. The results will leave you with smoother, healthier, and younger looking skin. Typically, we recommend multiple treatments for optimal results, which are usually spaced 3 weeks apart.

How much does microdermabrasion cost?

Your cost for microdermabrasion treatments will be discussed in your first appointment with our skin care providers. Once you discuss your needs and they examine your complexion, your custom treatment plan will be made. SSK Plastic Surgery often has specials on skin treatments like microdermabrasion plus discounted packages if you buy several sessions.

Should I get microdermabrasion or a chemical peel?

Depending on your concerns and goals, your skin care provider will help you determine if microdermabrasion or a chemical peel is the best procedure for you. In a nutshell, microdermabrasion clears away the surface layer of dead and damaged skin cells to make your complexion look smoother and healthier. You can get these same results from a light chemical peel. A stronger chemical peel or dermabrasion can help if your issues are deeper. Recovery time might also influence which procedure you prefer, with microdermabrasion offering only minimal downtime.

How often should I get microdermabrasion treatments?

To start, you may need anywhere from 5 – 12 microdermabrasion treatments scheduled about 2 – 4 weeks apart to see your best results. After that, you should schedule appointments every 4 – 8 weeks to maintain your skin's health. In your initial consultation, our providers will create a treatment plan with suggestions specific to your skin's needs, including how often you may need to schedule appointments for microdermabrasion.

How should I care for my skin after a microdermabrasion treatment?

After your microdermabrasion procedure, you are encouraged to avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day to allow your skin time to rest. You need to avoid UV rays (tanning beds and natural sunlight) and shield your skin with sunscreen. To minimize redness and swelling after the procedure, our team may suggest a skin-soothing serum or cold compresses.

Can I combine microdermabrasion with other treatments?

Since microdermabrasion is a surface skin treatment, you may consider combining it with other procedures. Many patients get microdermabrasion along with a facial or an injectable wrinkle treatment, like BOTOX. Talk with our team about your aesthetic worries during your initial consultation so we can create a plan that fits all your goals.
