Contact UsWhat is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing with a laser at SSK Plastic Surgery is a nonsurgical aesthetic procedure that utilizes pulsating beams of energy to remove damaged surface skin layer by layer. The procedure is great for reducing facial lines and wrinkles and for minimizing skin flaws, including acne scars, pigmentation, and other issues. Also called a laser peel, fractional skin resurfacing is considered an effective facial treatment for patients desiring softer, clearer, youthful-looking skin. Based on the condition of the patient's complexion, the treatment can be adjusted for the best results. There is little downtime needed for most laser skin resurfacing treatments. Any concerns or questions may be reviewed with Newport Beach, CA board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi during your assessment and consultation.
What are the Types of Laser Treatments?
SSK Plastic Surgery has three kinds of laser skin resurfacing procedures that are chosen based on the condition of your skin. Some are performed for milder cases of skin damage while others are more aggressive:
- Ablative Laser Treatments
Ablative lasers remove thin layers of skin, similar to dermabrasion or a deep chemical peel, with a precision that allows the laser technician to reduce skin damage. Ablative lasers are best for firming the skin, as well as correcting acne scars and wrinkles. - Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
Non-ablative lasers don't remove the skin — the light simply makes micro-injuries to the skin cells to promote the body's natural healing response. Non-ablative procedures are great for addressing wrinkles and fine lines on patients who are able to wait several months for strong results. - Fractional Laser Treatments
Fractional laser treatments are a combination of non-ablative and ablative that create small holes in the lower skin layers. The skin's automatic healing leads to tighter, healthier skin. Fractional lasers can also be used to help fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, and pigmentation issues.

Am I A Candidate For Laser Skin Resurfacing?
There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing which laser peel is right for your skin. Laser skin resurfacing is designed for people who are unsatisfied with their overall complexion. If you have sun-damaged skin, acne scars, age spots, wrinkles and fine lines, redness, or pigmentation concerns, laser skin resurfacing treatment can help correct these imperfections. In addition, laser skin resurfacing is a good solution if you have rough skin texture, scaly patches, or other irregularities. A laser peel isn't suggested for anyone who has very dark skin tones or active acne outbreaks. Also, it's important to understand that there is downtime needed after laser therapy. Some patients, based on the condition of their skin, may require as much as 2 – 3 weeks to recover.
How is Laser Skin Resurfacing Performed?
SSK Plastic Surgery offers the Venus Versa™ multi-treatment platform to resurface the skin and reduce the appearance of acne scars, rosacea, and uneven skin texture and pigmentation. Venus Versa is a top-of-the-line system designed to increase the success of your treatment. Before you have a more intense or deeper laser resurfacing treatment, you may be asked to use a topical retinoid for 2 – 3 weeks before your laser treatment. This helps prep the skin for more effective results.
Medication will be given prior to the treatment to help minimize any pain for greater relaxation throughout your session. If your skin needs mild correction, topical anesthesia will be applied to numb treated areas where the laser will target. For the whole complexion or more intense laser treatments, a form of sedation may be required. During the procedure, you will relax in our special treatment chair while the laser handpiece glides over the skin, precisely targeting the needed areas for rejuvenation. You will feel the warmth from the laser followed with cold air from the system's built-in cooling device. The laser energy works to eliminate damaged skin cells while also stimulating natural collagen production.

What can I Expect after laser skin resurfacing?
For lighter peels, a healing ointment will be smoothed over the treated skin and you can return home to recover. The treated skin may appear red, and there will be some swelling and irritation. This should subside in a few days and the skin peeling process will last over a 3 – 5-day timeframe. For those who are receiving a deeper laser treatment, your recovery period will last longer. The treatment sections may be covered by dressings and the irritation, burning, and swelling side effects will be more intense.
Pain medication can be prescribed to help reduce these symptoms. The recovery period for a deeper peel can last several weeks. All patients should minimize their UV exposure following their treatment and apply sun protection throughout the day. Regardless of the intensity of the peel, the treated skin will naturally crust, flake, and peel away. It is crucial to avoid interfering with the healing process to prevent scarring and to protect your skin from UV exposure. Once the peeling is finished, the treated skin will feel smoother while looking rejuvenated, clearer, and younger.

Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQs
What affects the cost of laser skin resurfacing?
The cost of laser skin resurfacing varies based on the treatment type and the number of sessions needed to achieve your goals. During your consultation, we'll assess your skin concerns and discuss your desired outcomes. From there, we'll create a custom treatment plan that includes a breakdown of costs, ensuring you know exactly what to expect.
What can I do to support healing after my treatment?
Before you leave, we'll review detailed aftercare instructions to help your skin recover smoothly. It's crucial not to pick or peel at flaking skin, as this is part of the normal healing process, and interfering could lead to scars or other damage. Avoid any hair removal techniques on the treated area, such as shaving or waxing, and steer clear of depilatory products. To soothe your skin, we can suggest healing ointments that encourage faster recovery and reduce discomfort.
How frequently should I have laser resurfacing?
The ideal timing for laser resurfacing sessions depends on the type of laser and the intensity of the treatment. Deeper treatments typically require longer breaks between sessions, often several weeks or even months, to allow for proper healing and optimal results. During your consultation at our Newport Beach, CA office, we'll work with you to create a treatment timeline tailored to your goals, ensuring the process fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
