About Cheek Augmentation

Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that utilizes cheek implants or dermal fillers to contour cheeks that have lost volume, shape, or definition. Typically, the cheeks begin to lose volume as a result of the natural aging process. However, some individuals may naturally have flat cheeks due to genetics or their personal biological makeup. Board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi is highly-skilled with the latest and most modern techniques to provide you with amazing results. At SSK Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, Dr. Kelishadi and his team will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan to suit your cosmetic goals and needs. When developing a treatment plan, our practice takes your facial profile and build into consideration so that results look natural and flattering.

Ideal Candidates

You are an ideal candidate for cheek augmentation if you have flat or weak cheek structure and are in overall good health. Typically, patients who receive this procedure are over the age of 35 and have significant volume loss in their cheeks due to age or genetics. For severe volume loss, cheek implants are usually used (through surgical insertion) to restore cheek structure. However, if there is minimal volume loss, or if you prefer a less invasive approach, like dermal fillers, to add volume.

Procedure Technique

There are two approaches to cheek augmentation: cheek implants or dermal fillers. Your procedure will be dependent on your preferred method of choice. Both methods differ in terms on technique, invasiveness, and recovery.

  • Cheek augmentation with implants: Once your plastic surgeon has consulted with you on your specific cosmetic goals, implants will be selected for your procedure. Implants come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. They can even be custom made to specifically suit your unique facial structure. During the procedure, incisions will be made in either the upper mouth area or near the eyes. Implants are then inserted and the incisions are closed.
  • Cheek augmentation with fillers: There are many dermal fillers on the market today and although they produce stunning results, each is unique. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon or aesthetic specialist will be able to discuss the various fillers they have to offer and how they differ from each other. Typically, Juvéderm is used to restore cheek volume. Prior to treatment, injection sites will be marked and the filler will be injected via a thin syringe. Other dermal fillers may be used in conjunction with this procedure as well.

What To Expect

Your recovery time will vary depending on your procedure method. Typically, for cheek implant surgery, patients will be placed under general anesthesia. The procedure may last 1 – 2 hours and recovery usually takes 10 – 14 days. You should arrange for someone to pick you up after surgery and be prepared to take time off work. Vigorous activities should be avoided during your recovery period to prevent injury and all post-operative care provided by your plastic surgeon should be followed accordingly.

Cheek augmentation with dermal fillers is less invasive then cheek implant surgery. Typically, the procedure only takes 15 – 30 minutes and recovery usually lasts 7 – 10 days. During this time, the treated area may be red, sore, swelled, or tender. However, these symptoms should subside within a few days.
