By: Dr. Sean Kelishadi, M.D. FACS

There’s no question that achieving a stunning, long-lasting outcome is among the top goals for patients considering Brazilian butt lift surgery. Even more important, however, is undergoing a safe procedure without complication. Acclaimed board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi and the expert team at SSK Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, CA adhere to the highest standards in patient safety and health, and are committed to using only the safest and most reliable tools and technologies for all procedures, including BBL. Learn more here about the potential risks of BBL surgery, and find out why it may be the safer and more natural butt augmentation alternative you’re looking for.

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

Though its name may be somewhat misleading, the Brazilian butt lift does not physically lift the buttocks, nor does it remove sagging skin in the same way that a traditional butt lift does. Instead, Brazilian butt lift – or BBL – aims to enhance the volume and shape of the butt through advanced fat grafting. During BBL surgery, unwanted fat cells are harvested from elsewhere on the patient’s body and transferred to the buttocks for a fuller, rounder, more attractive rear end.

Where is the fat liposuctioned out for BBL?

The liposuction site(s) chosen for Brazilian butt lift surgery can vary from person to person based on where the patient has enough available fat, where he or she would like to trim excess or unwanted fat, and other factors. Most often, fat is removed for BBL transfer from one or more of the following areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Flanks
  • Thighs

In many cases, additional liposuction is performed around the waistline, lower back, and flanks to further slim the area and accentuate the newly enhanced buttocks.

Is BBL safe?

Brazilian butt lift is considered an extremely safe and effective butt enhancement procedure when performed by a qualified, certified, and experienced plastic surgeon. Because BBL involves a native fat transfer vs. synthetic implants, the risk of adverse or allergic reaction is virtually nonexistent. Like all surgical procedures, however, BBL does carry a few potential risks that patients should consider. Potential BBL complications are rare and typically mild but may include:

  • Bruising
  • Delayed healing/prolonged swelling
  • Stretch marks
  • Poor cosmetic outcome
  • Low rate of fat cell survival
  • Changes to BBL results over time, usually with weight fluctuation

More serious risks of BBL surgery can include:

  • Anesthesia-related complications
  • Infection at either surgical site
  • Blood clot/DVT
  • Tissue necrosis

To minimize your risk of BBL complications, which are rare, it is critical that you choose a highly qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure. Additionally, patients should adhere to Dr. Kelishadi’s postoperative guidelines during BBL recovery to ensure proper healing and an optimal result without complication.

Are there any alternatives to BBL?

Even with its exceptional safety and satisfaction ratings, many patients are curious about alternatives to Brazilian butt lift surgery. For some patients, BBL is not an option because they don’t have enough excess fat for liposuction and transfer. In other cases, patients desire a more dramatic size increase than is possible with fat transfer alone. Regardless of your reasons for seeking a BBL alternative, Dr. Kelishadi will discuss all of your available butt enhancement options to determine which one best meets your needs. These may include glute implants, nonsurgical butt lift with Sculptra® injections, or a combination procedure.
