Where Are Breast Lift Incisions Placed?
8/5/2020
There is no doubt that breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic breast surgeries performed in Newport Beach, CA each year, but the breast lift is not far behind. With its ability to transform a woman’s physique and restore a perkier, more youthful breast position, a breast lift can further enhance the results of breast augmentation or be highly beneficial as a stand-alone procedure.
One of the first questions patients have when it comes to cosmetic surgery, whether on the breasts or elsewhere, is what kind of scarring they can expect after the procedure. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi and the professional team at SSK Plastic Surgery fully understand the desire to minimize visible scarring, and Dr. Kelishadi takes great care to help patients keep their work discreet while still providing stunning results. Learn more about Newport Beach breast lift surgery here, including how it is performed, where the incisions are placed, and how long your results may last.
Why do you need a breast lift?
While the main reason for undergoing a breast lift surgery is to bring the breasts up to a more normal, natural, youthful level, there are several underlying causes for drooping or sagging breasts. The most common factors that contribute to the need for breast lift surgery include:
- Aging
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Weight loss
- Gravity
- Genetics
What does a breast lift involve?
Breast lift, formally known as mastopexy, is a highly effective cosmetic surgery that helps restore a more youthful breast position primarily through skin removal. In some cases, liposuction, fat grafting, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or other complementary procedures may be performed alongside a breast lift to help the patient achieve an even more dramatic transformation.
How is a breast lift done?
During breast lift surgery, Dr. Kelishadi will carefully make an incision(s) along the breast. The precise location, size, and orientation of the incision will depend on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed, whether or not breast implants are being placed simultaneously, and other factors. Once the extra skin has been removed, the remaining skin will be pulled taut and secured with sutures, effectively raising the entire breast and nipple to a more youthful position. In addition, the previously deflated-looking breast takes on a more attractive shape. In cases of more severe drooping, Dr. Kelishadi may also need to reposition the nipple-areola complex as part of breast lift surgery.
Does a breast lift leave scars?
As with any surgery requiring incisions, it is important for breast lift patients to have realistic expectations for their results and understand that some level of scarring is unavoidable. Dr. Kelishadi shares in his patients’ desires to keep visible scarring to a minimum and places his incisions in areas where they can be concealed or camouflaged within the natural lines of the body and underneath clothing as much as possible.
For patients who are undergoing breast augmentation only, the incisions are typically able to be placed in the crease underneath the breast, where they are fairly well hidden. In the case of breast lift surgery, many patients will require an incision around the nipple and vertically down the center of the lower portion of the breast. This is often referred to as a “lollipop” incision. In other cases, an inverted-T or anchor incision may be used.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Kelishadi will thoroughly discuss your concerns and explain all of your options at length to determine the best incision placement for breast augmentation, breast lift, and any other procedure you may be considering. The caring team at SSK Plastic Surgery will also provide comprehensive postoperative guidelines and recommendations to help your incisions heal properly and fade as much as possible. The overwhelming majority of patients agree that their gorgeous new figure is well worth the scars associated with a breast lift.
How long does a breast lift last?
Although cosmetic surgery can’t stop the aging process or the force of gravity, a breast lift can certainly provide long-lasting results that can be enjoyed for many years to come. Some helpful tips to maintain and prolong your breast lift results include:
- Wear supportive undergarments, especially when exercising
- Maintain a stable weight
- Eat a healthy diet
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid sun exposure
- Do not smoke
