What You Should Know Before Getting Breast Implants
7/5/2022
Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular and in-demand cosmetic procedures performed each year. While breast augmentation has become fairly routine in some ways, there are still a number of important things a patient should know before deciding to have surgery. At SSK Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, CA, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi takes great care to ensure patients considering breast augmentation have a good understanding of all of their options, what to expect during the procedure, and what their recovery may entail. Here, we’ll cover all of this information and more to help you feel confident, comfortable, and prepared ahead of your breast augmentation.
Should I get breast implants?
The decision to get breast enhancement surgery is ultimately a personal one. For many women, breast augmentation offers an opportunity to restore a more youthful look and reverse the unwanted side effects of aging, pregnancy, or weight loss. In other cases, patients choose breast augmentation surgery to add volume to their naturally small breasts and feel more feminine overall. Should you decide to pursue breast augmentation surgery, there are several important things you’ll need to know, including:
You have options
Not only can patients choose between saline implants, silicone gel implants, and a fat transfer to the breast, but they can also make decisions about other aspects of their breast augmentation, including:
- Type of implant
- Breast implant size
- Implant placement
- Implant profile
- Lift or no lift
During your initial consultation, Dr. Kelishadi will evaluate many factors – such as your body type, skin elasticity, lifestyle, and desired outcome – to help you make the most appropriate decisions regarding these aspects of your surgery.
You may have visible scarring
Scarring is an unavoidable part of breast augmentation surgery, but Dr. Kelishadi makes every attempt to minimize the amount of visible scarring a patient will have. In most cases, breast implants can be placed through incisions beneath the breasts, near the inframammary crease. This allows the scars to be partially concealed within the natural lines of the body, and most patients are able to hide their scars beneath clothing and swimsuits. When patients choose to pair their breast augmentation with a breast lift, however, additional incisions required for the procedure typically lead to a greater amount of visible scarring. Again, though, these scars are usually still concealable beneath clothing and swimsuits.
Recovery may take six weeks or longer
It can take up to 6 – 8 weeks or longer for the majority of breast augmentation swelling to resolve and for the implants to soften and settle. During this time, patients should wear a supportive bra without wires, even while sleeping. Patients should also refrain from strenuous physical activity, including exercise and heavy lifting, for at least six weeks. Fortunately, however, most women are able to return to work and other light activities after just 1 – 3 weeks.
You will likely need a revision at some point
Breast implants are not designed to last forever, and the body will also change over time. Generally speaking, most women will need to have their breast implants replaced at some point in their lifetime, though it may be up to 10 – 15 years before it becomes necessary.
All in all, breast augmentation can provide well-prepared patients with stunning, natural-looking, and long-lasting results that leave them feeling more feminine and confident than ever.
