How should I prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

In the days and weeks leading up to your breast augmentation surgery, it is important to prepare for the procedure itself, as well as the recovery period, in order to make the experience as seamless, comfortable, and successful as possible. Some of the most helpful things to do prior to breast augmentation surgery include:

  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Stay hydrated
  • Do not smoke
  • Schedule time off from work
  • Clear your social calendar
  • Set up a comfortable place to rest during recovery
  • Stock your fridge with healthy foods and snacks for your recovery period
  • Plan for help at home and with the kids during your recovery

How does breast augmentation surgery work?

Breast augmentation surgery is performed using general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure and takes about 2 – 3 hours to complete. While each breast augmentation surgery is customized to match the patient’s individual needs and goals, most procedures involve inserting either silicone or saline breast implants into the breast pocket via an incision in the inframammary crease. Patients who pair their breast augmentation with a breast lift will require additional incisions. Once Dr. Kelishadi has ensured optimal size, placement, and symmetry, the incisions will be closed with sutures. The patient will then be monitored in the recovery room before being discharged to begin their recovery at home. Patients may not drive themselves home after breast augmentation surgery.

How long is breast augmentation recovery?

On average, patients can expect to be able to return to work and other light daily activities about two weeks after breast augmentation surgery. In some cases, patients are able to resume desk work even sooner. Strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting will be off-limits for about 6 – 8 weeks. At that time, the majority of breast augmentation swelling will have resolved, and patients will be able to see their final outcome taking shape. Subtle changes may develop over the next several weeks and months as the tissues continue to heal and settle.

How long does it take breast implant scars to fade?

It typically takes about a week for breast implant incisions to close. After this time, the incisions will gradually heal into scars and should begin to fade from red to pink to a white or skin-colored tone. While some visible scarring is unavoidable with breast augmentation surgery, the vast majority of patients agree that their beautiful, feminine new figure is well worth it.
