Most women who are considering breast augmentation surgery are somewhat familiar with what to expect after their procedure, including how long recovery may take and what their new breasts may look like. When it comes to the details of the surgery itself, however, you may have a few more questions. At SSK Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, CA, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Kelishadi takes great care to ensure all of his patients are well-educated on the details of their procedure so that they can prepare accordingly and feel comfortable and confident going into surgery. Review the information below to gain a better understanding of how breast augmentation surgery is performed, including how long the procedure may take and when you’ll be able to go home.

What are my options for breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery is not a one-size-fits-all procedure, nor should it be. With every woman’s body and desires being unique, Dr. Kelishadi customizes each breast augmentation case to match the patient’s individual needs and goals. During your consultation and preoperative appointments, Dr. Kelishadi will discuss your ideal outcome at length and help you make a number of important decisions about your surgery, including:

  • Breast implants vs. fat transfer
  • Type of implant
  • Size/volume of implant
  • Implant profile
  • Implant placement
  • Breast augmentation with lift or without lift
  • Use of DuraSorb® mesh

How long is breast implant surgery?

Based on the details of your surgical plan, your breast augmentation is likely to last about 1 – 2 hours. For more complex cases, including those that involve a combined breast lift or the removal and replacement of breast implants, surgery may take up to three hours or longer. During this time, patients will be under general anesthesia and will be closely monitored in the operating room. At the conclusion of the case, patients will be taken to the recovery room, where they will be woken up from anesthesia and observed for about one hour. Once they have spoken with Dr. Kelishadi and a member of our team regarding postoperative care and other instructions, patients can be driven home by a trusted friend or loved one to begin the remainder of their recovery.

Can you get a tummy tuck and breast implants at the same time?

Absolutely. In fact, many women combine multiple body contouring procedures in order to achieve a more dramatic transformation, cut down on overall recovery time, and avoid certain fees associated with individual procedures. One of the most popular combination procedures is the mommy makeover, which typically includes:

  • Breast augmentation and/or lift
  • Tummy tuck
  • Liposuction
  • Labiaplasty

Patients considering a mommy makeover or another combination procedure should keep in mind that their surgery will likely take up to 2 – 4 hours or longer. In more extensive cases, patients may even need to spend one or more nights in the hospital or surgical facility before returning home to continue their recovery. During your initial consultation, Dr. Kelishadi will discuss all of these details with you at great length to ensure you know what to expect before, during, and after surgery.
