Male aging is a true phenomenon that recently has been given heightened attention.
In fact, just as we've known about the effects of female aging and menopause, scientists are studying the effects of male aging, termed "andropause" or "male menopause."
A commonly held view is that the better- and younger-looking guy gets the girl and the job, sometimes even a higher paycheck. Matthew McConaughey easily fills the bill on all three of those counts. For those reasons, the number of men who undergo plastic surgical and nonsurgical procedures to improve their looks for occupational and personal goals has increased steadily, even doubling over the past 15 years.
As an Orange County plastic surgeon, my remedies for men often include injections of “Bro-tox” and fillers, rhinoplasty, liposuction, body contouring, and breast-reduction surgery, as well as face lift, neck lift, and quality skin care. Awareness and appropriate treatment can yield great results!
Life’s stresses have caused some men to show early signs of aging—lines, wrinkles, and folds in the face and neck that can make them look tired, angry, and unapproachable. Aging tends to cause fat to accumulate around the jowls/neck, breasts, waist, hips, abdomen, and thighs. Sometimes, even a healthy lifestyle isn't enough to reach your goals. Frustration, low self-esteem, and avoidance of social and other activities may result.
Botox Cosmetic® is the #1 quick and simple nonsurgical procedure for males (nearly 400,000 yearly). Using our skill and comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy, we often inject Botox®, or another neurotoxin named Dysport®, in crow’s feet at the eyes’ outer edge, and in frown lines between the eyes and on the forehead. It reduces or eliminates moderate to severe lines by calming the expression muscles that cause them. The result of looking less stressed, more relaxed, and happier usually lasts several months to alleviate these signs of aging. Strategically-placed injection treatments are quick, usually without pain or side effects. An occasional patient experiences a little short-term tenderness, redness, bruising, or swelling that can be aided by the application of a cold pack. Patients normally return immediately to their usual activities.
People often focus on your face. Telling more about you than you may realize, it’s the first place to show fatigue, upset, a lack of wellness, and aging. Gravity is a continual downward force compounded by internal and external energies that take a toll.
Adverse effects show in dark circles and shadows, bags, puffiness, or excessive lines under or around eyes; in excessively fatty, puffy, or sagging eyelids (hooding); in frown lines between the eyes and on the forehead; and in formed jowls from the corners of the mouth downward (marionette lines) that can make the jawline become less defined and droop into the neck. Sagging, wrinkling, lost volume, and folds tell the tale, and can be remedied through our multi-modality approach in a face lift. Damage from too much sun and a lack of quality skin care are also key factors in facial aging. Face lift has similar indications for men as for women. A balanced, natural look is our goal.
After your procedure, your designated driver will take you home, and our goal is to get you back to your normal activities as soon as possible. Normally, we will remove your surgical dressing the next day. We anticipate that your discomfort will be minor and that you may experience some level of numbness while your bruising and swelling do much to resolve, usually no longer than several weeks’ time. Soon you will enjoy your updated look of lifted, tightened skin that now shows fewer wrinkles and gives you a younger, refreshed appearance.
Whatever adverse forces affect the face go on to inflict damage on the neck. Some men are super-fit from working out but have a loose, large neck. When such a neck is corrected, it can make them look “as though they lost 40 pounds.” Liposuction of the neck and/or fat transfer to volume-deficient areas of the face may also be included. In a “more involved” neck lift, a platysmaplasty (where I tighten the loosened muscle of the neck under the chin to produce a more-defined angle from the jaw and chin to the neck) may be needed. Our efforts to reduce post-treatment inflammation via careful tissue handling will show during your recovery.
You will be wearing a neck-wrap dressing or a “jaw bra” when your designated driver takes you home. Normally, we will remove your surgical dressing the next day. The additional advantages are downtime of only 1 to 2 weeks and a natural look. Results will become obvious to you during the next 2-3 weeks as swelling resolves and the soft tissue takes on its new form. You may continue to see improvement over the next few months and can rejoice in a better-defined jawline and a younger look that we hope will last over the long term.
Daily, quality skin care is also vital to a man’s health in being the “secret” to maintaining a youthful look. It is quick, easy, cost effective, and not painful. Great care for the face and the hands, our daily ambassadors, should also go to the neck. The rest of the body needs adequate attention, too. Depending on your skin condition and/or expectations with treatment, we can use chemical peels, facials, microdermabrasion, or top-of-the-line custom-tailored skin products to treat and improve the impressions of under-eye circles, acne, facial lines, various types of skin blemishes, and problems with skin texture and tone to make skin look younger and brighter.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery, “Nose Job”):
About 70,000 men had nose surgery in 2013. The results of rhinoplasty are tailored for each patient, sometimes to improve breathing but most often to achieve a more-balanced, more-attractive look by altering the size, shape, and/or angle. Patients usually are under general anesthesia as outpatients. We carefully confine most incisions to the inside of the nose whenever we can and hide external incisions as well as possible. Bruising and swelling, maybe only beneath the eyes, are normal for such a delicate area of the face. A light splint on your nose for a week will maintain the intended shape and minimize swelling, but there will NOT be any dressings inside your nose.
Meanwhile, if I placed sutures I will remove them on Day 4. Many patients return to school and/or unstrenuous aspects of their jobs in 1 to 2 weeks while the bruising and swelling dissipate. You may return to strenuous activities in several weeks. You will see the final result of your nose surgery in 6 to 12 months. Curious about options for rhinoplasty in Orange County? Liposuction and Body Contouring:
Liposuction removes excess fat that is unresponsive to diet and exercise, thereby achieving more-proportionate and more-pronounced contours to look trimmer and more attractive. Frequently targeted areas are from the jowls/neck and the upper arms on down, even from the knees to the ankles. Liposuction can bring significant results. Loose, hanging skin that accompanies excess fat can be surgically removed and the area stitched and tightened. Additional, complementary procedures to achieve greater overall proportion, strengthening or definition of muscles, and slimming may include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), male breast reduction, or the possible addition of volume with cosmetic implants or your own tissue using fat grafting.
Liposuction is often an outpatient procedure. When your driver takes you home, you will be wearing compression garments and you should continue to wear them for a few weeks to encourage optimal healing. Further information follows:
- Walking is permitted and healthful while you recover, especially during the first week when you will need to avoid strenuous activities.
- Your recovery time and your amount of bruising and swelling will depend on numerous factors. Those factors include the number of treatment sites and whether I have also just done a concurrent procedure, such as an arm lift, a tummy tuck, a neck lift, or a male breast reduction.
- You may be able to return to work in about a week, or even less, depending on the extent of your procedure(s) and the physical demands of your job.
- Your deep sutures will dissolve over 2-6 months to support your incisions during the most-critical stages of wound healing and collagen remodeling; any external sutures you see will be removed within two weeks. For the next several months, the connective tissue in your skin will keep contracting (using the beneficial effects of scars contracting over time--scars can be on the inside where you can’t see them, too!) and adjusting to the removal of fat that has taken place.
- Final results should show your trimmer contours in 1-6 months and can be long-lasting through a consistent program of a healthful diet and appropriate exercise.
Male BreastReduction Surgery (Gynecomastia):
Excess tissue and/or fat, use of certain prescription and recreational drugs, including steroids, can cause enlarged male breasts at any time from puberty onward. Liposuction and/or surgical male breast reduction will yield a flatter, more-masculine contour to the chest. Gynecomastia is usually treated as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. When your driver takes you home, you will be wearing a compression garment or wrapping for 7-14 days to help in controlling swelling. If needed, over-the-counter and/or prescription pain medications taken by mouth should keep you comfortable. The length of your incisions and/or number of sutures you receive depends on the approach(es) we use to treat your condition.
